The drive down the mountain in Niall’s shiny black SUV was a lot of fun. He drove fast, knowing the twisting roads intimately. The sky was a perfect, cloudless blue and the air blowing in through the open windows was sweet and full of promise. Niall put on an Aerosmith album—an old favorite of theirs—and it was too loud to talk, so Marcia enjoyed the view and drifted in her thoughts.

Dalton’s words had shaken her up. But they’d also encouraged her—Niall was her oldest friend, and she was glad if she’d brought some happiness into his life. The last thing she wanted to do was hurt him again. The pair of them were wounded by life. They’d missed their chance at love, but maybe they could do some good by being there for each other.

When they arrived in Hope Valley, they parked up in a downtown lot and Marcia sighed happily. Just two days away and she’d missed this town a lot. It was bustling this morning, plenty of people out, enjoying the weekend. Babies in strollers, dogs yapping. She slid a glance at Niall. He seemed equally content to be there.

“Any chores you need to run?” she asked.

“Not really.” He jumped out and ran around to open the door for her.

“I’m going to take you out today,” she said, as she sprung out of the car. “We’re gonna have coffees, lunch, ice cream. Let’s make the most of being in civilization!”

His dark eyes softened with affection. “Sounds great.”

The sidewalks were full of families, couples, people running into their friends and catching up on news. She loved the way that everyone seemed to know each other in this town.

“Remember how we used to complain that coffee tasted nothing liked how it smelled?” she said as they stopped outside a cute café, the windows lined with flowerboxes. “And now I can’t get enough of it.”

Niall laughed. “We were trying so hard to be grown up. But we both preferred sweet drinks, like all kids. That time we ordered espressos and you made the best face when you tasted yours.”

She poked him in the ribs. “You should’ve seen your face, bucko. You looked like you were eating mud.”

“Whatever. I’m an Americano man these days.”

She crooked a grin at him. “Typical, macho guy. I’ll bet you like lattes, though.”

He shrugged. “If you want to get lattes, let’s get lattes.”

“I knew it.” She scampered into the café and he followed, shaking his head indulgently.

They got them in takeout cups and wandered over to the public park near the main street, which was compact but pretty, with lush flowerbeds and different areas for kids to play in. They stopped at an ornamental pond and watched a quacking mother duck leading a train of tiny yellow ducklings across the glistening water.

“Do you see much of your parents?” Niall asked.

“No.” She kept looking at the ducks and she was glad he couldn’t see her expression. “I’ve stopped talking to them. They were so cold to me when my music failed and Michael left me.
